The Youth Ambassador competition is an annual event run by Lions Clubs Ireland. This competition acknowledges and awards young people between 15 and 19 years of age for their community involvement, their leadership skills and speaking ability.

Each year, local clubs run their own preliminary rounds to select their local Youth Ambassador. This year Portlaoise Lions Club were delighted to nominate James Doyle, 5th yr student from St Mary's CBS Portlaoise.

The National Final took place on Saturday January 17 in the Midlands Park Hotel Portlaoise.

During this event, each Youth Ambassador underwent in depth interviews and made presentations to showcase their Community and voluntary Work.

"I was delighted with the success of the day and trust all who attended enjoyed it particularly the candidates," said Ms Stephanie Keating, the district's Young Ambassador Officer.

"I know each candidate has learned so much and gained confidence from their involvement in the Young Ambassador Programme.

"Thank you to Portlaoise Lions club for facilitating us and everybody who attended your presence there certainly helped to make the day such a success but a particular thank you to the clubs and the young ambassador officers for your support of this great programme," she said.

"The most important thank you is to the wonderful candidates for your service in our communities and for such an inspirational day in Portlaoise," Ms Keating finished.
