Portlaoise's has its own Mrs Brown called 'Shirley' who is running in the VHI Mini-Marathon

Tom Duffy dresses up to help the homeless

Finglas in Dublin is home to the wonderful Mrs Brown and Portlaoise in Laois is home to the wonderful, albeit temporary, Mrs Duffy.

The Feed Our Homeless ambassador for Laois has dubbed himself ‘Shirley’ to enter the up-coming women’s mini marathon and will dress up as a woman in a frock and wig to fundraise for his beloved voluntary group.

Game for a laugh Tom Duffy has decided to add to the fun by looking for fashion- sense and style advice from the ladies of Laois. Tom has begun posting pictures of himself in different outfits on his Facebook page.

He intends to try on different frocks and wigs over the next week or so and whichever outfit gets the most Facebook likes will be the outfit that he will wear to the mini marathon.

“Sure isn’t it a bit of craic and good for a laugh. I was wondering how to raise funds for Feed Our Homeless and remembered the women’s mini marathon was coming up, so I thought to myself, ah sure why not.

“I phoned our founder Tony Walsh and told to him that I was thinking of dressing up as a woman and entering the women’s mini-marathon and he thought it was a great idea and that he’d do it too.

“I’ll probably get a slagging from my friends but I don’t mind that, sure that’s part of the fun. This fundraising opportunity can really help us to keep looking after our homeless people and rough sleepers.” he said.

People out and about in Portlaoise on Saturday night might bump into Tom Duffy. However, even his closest of friends might not recognise him because he is going walkabout dressed as ‘Shirley’ to surprise people he knows, have a laugh with them and to ask them to sponsor him.

Tom travels to Westmoreland Street in Dublin each week with food and clothing donated by people in Laois directly to homeless people. He wishes to thank everyone in Laois and Athy for their continued support and donations.

Tom is appealing for pot noodles, tea, coffee, sugar, chocolate bars, biscuits, crisps, men’s socks, underwear and warm clothing for the soup kitchen and outreach service on Sunday coming.

If you wish to sponsor Tom Duffy for the VHI Women’s Mini-Marathon 2018 go to find Mini Marathon – Feed Our Homeless and press donate or phone Tom Duffy 087 627 1309.
