Brent Donoghue from Durrow
Brent Donoghue 15 years old from Durrow, has lost an amazing 3 and a half stone in less than 4 months.
We asked Brent what was his driving force to lose weight and get fit and healthy, as we know so many kids are struggling with weight issues and lack of activity in this current climate.
Brent told us that his turning point was in August 2017.
" I did what every young person my age had to do, go shopping for my school uniform, I felt so embarresed as my shirt was the biggest size they made, then I went for my jumper and they didnt have my size, so they had to order in a special one” Brent hung his head telling us how bad he felt, and how low his confidence was at that time.
“I knew I had to do something and I tried to cut back as much as I could, but I loved my grub and I always felt hungry, so needless to say I didnt get too far, and as the time went on I felt even more concious and at an all time low," he said.
The big change for Brent came in april of this year, when his mother Theresa knowing that her son was feeling very uncomfortable in school, asked if he would like to come along to her slimming group in Abbeyleix.
"I knew I needed to get a grip so I decided to give it a go. I remember meeting Carmel my consultant, who put me at ease staright away. When she told me all the lovely meals I could eat, I was blown away, she even told me I could still have treats. The plan that I was given was a ' Free to go plan', where I was asked to make cool choices, from lots of free food choices, including fresh fruit and veg, lean meat and lots of yummy foods. Some of my cool swaps were changing form pringles to a packet of skips, or having a Slimming World bar. I loved all the changes and I never felt hungry."
Brent told us that he is a totally different kid now, he has not only changed his eating habbits, by just swapping from high calorie food to healthier options, while still being able to enjoy a treat aswell. His favourite is sticky chicken rice, in fact its the family favourite. He has also taken up walking, he now walks 14 to 16k a day.
"I feel like a different person and I love the NEW ME! I also love going to my group every week, the other members are like family, they root for me and everyone else in the group. We all have a great laugh too and I love how we are all encouraged by our consultant Carmel."
Carmel told us: " I am one proud consultant to see the changes in Brent since he joined. He is now a confident young man, who now encourages and inspires all the members in group, he is a credit to his mother Theresa ( who is a target member) who encouraged her son to come along and educate him on healthy eating. Brent has inspired so many young people and I know he will continue to do so"
So final word from Brent: " I am very happy this year as I get ready to go back to school, shopping for my school uniform was a breeze as I now feel normal and I have dropped down several sizes. I not only feel slimmer and healthier after losing 3 and a half stone, I now feel very confident and I can keep my head up high. I would encourage any young person who felt just like me, to take the step forward and find a Slimming World group. I promise you will love the feeling of being slim forever"
Carmel runs her Slimming World group in Abbeyleix Manor Hotel every Wednesday 9.30&11.30 am or 5.30&7.30 pm, for more info contact her on 087-2972305
What is Slimming World doing to tackle childhood obesity?
Slimming World offers unique support to young people. Adolescents aged between 11 and 15 attend a group for free if they are accompanied by a fee-paying parent or guardian who is responsible for their meals. If the accompanying adult isn’t a member, we charge a reduced weekly fee of€7.50 plus normal joining fee for our support and advice.
Slimming World developed a Free2Go eating plan, based on Food Optimising, specifically for young people to encourage unlimited enjoyment of fruit, vegetables and other low energy dense, satiating foods such as lean meats, poultry, fish, pasta, potatoes and rice, while gradually reducing intake of more energy dense, fatty and sugary foods.
The emphasis is on healthy eating and increased physical activity, rather than weight loss.
Consultants inform the child’s GP that their patient is attending Slimming World and invite them to get in touch if they would like more information.
Consultants will not suggest weight changes or target weights for 11-15 year olds.
However, they do have age-specific BMI centile charts from the Child Growth
Foundation that show healthy BMIs for young people and monitor them frequently along with their parent/guardian.
Since the school leaving age has gone up, young people aged 16 and 17 years also pay just €7.50 per week.
