Heidi Higgins, a student at Laois VEC’s Abbeyleix Further Education Centre, has qualified as one of the eight finalists in the Nokia Young Designer of the Year 2004 competition.
Heidi is a student at the centre, studying art, craft and design, and is currently preparing her portfolio with plans to go on to art college.
This talented young Laois designer would love to study fashion, and the place in the final of this prestigious competition is certainly an ideal start to her dream career.
The competition required students from around the country to enter three designs for outfits in a mood board context.
Out of an overwhelming response nationwide, Heidi was chosen as one of the final eight to go on to the Point Depot later this month.
“We are very proud of Heidi’s achievement,” said centre director, Anne O’Keefe, “and she is guaranteed our full support in all aspects of her portfolio preparation and this national competition.”
Heidi’s designs are based on moths, both their destruction of clothes and their attraction to light.
“Her designs are modern and easily translate to the high street,” said her tutor, Jackie Carter. “Heidi is an enthusiastic student and has wonderful potential, we wish her all the best.”
Students of fashion design, another PLC course in the centre, worked very hard on the finished garments with Heidi.
Ensuring even further acclaim, Heidi and her collection will be featured on the RTE programme ‘Our House’ in a few weeks’ time.
The final is taking place in the Point Depot, Dublin, where Heidi’s garments will be modelled by the UCD students who organise the competition.
