Abbeyleix St Lazarian’s off to a flyer with victory  over Borris-Kilcotton

Abbeyleix St Lazarian’s have gotten their championship off to the best possible start as they defeated Borris-Kilcotton in Group B this evening.

Borris-Kilcotton started off their opening game of the Senior Championship with three fine points from play within the first four minutes under the lights at Laois Hire O’Moore Park this evening.

Abbeyleix St.Lazarian’s soon responded when Colm Walsh opened their scoring with a lovely point from play. Borris responded in style as Neil Foyle found the back of net narrowly beating Enda Rowland. A free for Abbeyleix allowed Aaron Brennan to add his name to the score sheet keeping their presence in the game. Stephen Dunphy soon replied with a well pointed score from play.

A free from Aaron Brennan saw Abbeyleix gain their third point of the game. Jer Quinlan hit his first score of the contest to push his side into a five-point advantage midway through the first-half. Aaron Dunphy then scored a perfectly placed free taken from just under the stand.

Abbeyleix St. Lazarian’s responded strongly with three lovely scores, two points from Aaron Brennan (one free) and a superb goal from Fionan Mahony. Borris hit back matching Abbeyleix’s three scores on the trot with two points from Jer Quinlan and the other from Aaron Dunphy.

Enda Rowland stepped up and struck a free for his first of the game, followed by a nice strike from Aaron Brennan. Rowland left the goal mouth once again to hit a fabulous score from his own 45 metre line. Borris-Kilcotton went in at half time with only a point lead leaving it all to fight for in the second half here in Laois Hire O’Moore Park.

The scoring was opened straight from the throw-in as Jer Quinlan hit a score right between the two posts. Rowland once again stepped up to strike a point one over from a placed ball keeping the game in the melting pot. A fantastic goal from play hit with serious power by Ciaran Byrne left Eoin Fleming sitting and saw Abbeyleix-St. Lazarian’s go ahead for the first time in the game.

A free converted by Neil Foyle followed by an unlikely goal from a sideline puck from substitution PJ Scully brought Borris right back into the game giving them a two point lead. With only ten minutes gone in the second half, the game really started to pick up pace, a well placed score from a free saw Aaron Brennan keep the scoreboard board ticking over.

PJ Scully soon responded with serious impact from the bench slotting a point over the bar with great ease. Abbeyleix’s Aaron Brennan converted another placed ball for his side which was soon followed by a monster free from Enda Rowland which caught the hurl of Colin Byrne and found the back of the net. Aaron Brennan stepped up to a 65’ to bring his tally to eight points so far with twelve minutes left to play.

Aaron Dunphy showed his class at he stuck a beautiful score from over his shoulder. Ciaran Byrne secured a three point win for Abbeyleix St.Lazarian’s as he finished the game with a fine score from just under the stand which dissected the posts in the town end.
