St Conleth's have secured their place in the Senior Football Championship semi-finals, with a two-goal win over Timahoe in O’Dempsey’s on Sunday evening. This was arguably the game of the championship so far, with both sides showing their very best at various points in the game.
In the end, the winning of the game were St Conleth's three goals, which came thanks to Sinead Cullen, Alanna Havill, and an Aoibhe Byron penalty. Mo Nerney was at the fore for Timahoe. She scored a wonderful penalty of her own as part of an outstanding 1-7 tally.
St Conleth's 3-11
Timahoe 1-11
St Conleth's got out into a fantastic lead in the first ten minutes. They scored 1-3 with points coming from Alanna Havill, Eva Galvin, and Aoibhe Byron. Sinead Cullen got the goal in the tenth minute when she was played in wonderfully by Claire Fox.
Mo Nerney landed Timahoe's first score in the 12th minute but St Conleth's were ruthless, hitting straight back through Cullen before being awarded a penalty at the midway point. Shifra Havill was brought down leaving Aoibhe Byron to convert the penalty to make it 2-4 to 0-1 after 15 minutes.
Katie Donoghue landed a free for Timahoe only to see it immediately cancelled out by Byron. But Mo Nerney then took the game by the scruff of the neck, scoring the last three points of the half to bring Timahoe back into the game, trailing at the break by 2-5 to 0-5.
Timahoe burst out of the blocks after the restart, with a score each from Donoghue and Nerney before being awarded a penalty of their own. Donoghue was fouled and Nerney was clinical with her strike, bringing Timahoe to within a point.
But Conleth’s found another gear, scoring 1-5 without reply in the space of ten minutes. Eva Galvin kicked a point and got the assist for Alanna Havill's goal; the other four points all came from the boot of Aoibhe Byron, who was clinical all game.
Aisling Quigley had a fine game for Timahoe and kicked two scores back-to-back late on, with Nerney closing the game out with two of her own.
But the girls in red and green came up just short, meaning they remain in 4th place on four points. They face Park-Ratheniska next week knowing that a win or even a draw will see them take the final spot in the semi-finals.
The win moves St Conleth's onto eight points - enough to guarantee a place in the semi-finals. They face the current number-one side, Sarsfields next week, where the winner will finish in the top two and earn themselves a more favourable draw in the semis.
