It was a case of deja vu for a Laois team in Leinster as Annanough suffered the same fate as St Joseph's did two weeks ago as they were beaten after extra-time in a Leinster quarter-final by Glyde Rangers from Louth.
Annanough had gotten to the quarter-final by virtue of a victory over Carlow side St Mullins in the earlier round after Damien McCaul had scored 1-6 out of their 1-11 tally. McCaul notched up 1-5 on this occasion but it wasn't to be for Paul Lawlor's side in Stradbally this afternoon.
Glyde Rangers 2-11
Annanough 2-9
Glyde Rangers sprung to life within the opening 90 seconds as they raised a green flag. Ciaran Sheridan squared the ball to Lee Finnegan, who was given the easy task of tapping the ball into the net to send their large travelling support into raptures. They quickly added to their lead as Aaron Devlin split the posts to give them an early four-point lead.
McCaul opened his and Annanough's tally after 10 minutes having gone on a good run before kicking the ball over the black spot. Alan Kirk replied almost instantly for Glyde Rangers with 12 minutes on the clock. Annanough kicked on as they fired over the next three scores without reply. McCaul pointed a free while Killian Horgan scored a sublime point off the outside of his left boot before he followed it up with a free.
the Laois side were dealt a huge blow after 28 minutes as Fergal Scully was shown a black card. Glyde Rangers ended their 18 minute wait for a score courtesy of Brian Duffy as he pointed a free before McCaul kicked another free to leave a single point between the sides at the break.
Annanough came out the better of the two sides after half-time with a man less as they got in for goal. David Miller went on a superb run before giving Jamie Fenlon the easy task of palming the ball into the net to give them the lead for the first time in the contest. Horgan tapped over another free for Lawlor's side as they now led by three points. Scully returned to the field just as Killian Scott kicked a mark to leave two between the sides.
Glyde Rangers weren't going down without a fight as the next score put them ahead yet again. Brian Duffy providing the assist as Sheridan rattled the back of Sean Hennessy's net. McCaul scored another free in reply as the game was level for the first time. Sheridan was proving to be their main scoring threat as he replied almost instantly for Glyde Rangers. McCaul (free) and Alan Kirk traded points before Duffy kicked a free to push Glyde Rangers two points ahead.
Horgan and Kirk both raised white flags from placed balls before Annanough got in for their second goal of the game. A bit of a ruckus in the square saw the ball dropped from the Glyde Rangers' keepers hands with McCaul on hand to get push Annanough ahead. Trevor O'Brien pointed in the 53rd minute to level the game and that's the way the game would end as the sides faced another 20 minutes of extra-time.
The first-half of extra-time was a battle of attrition as the score remained the same at half-time. Oisin Lynch had presented Sheridan a huge goal chance but he couldn't beat Hennessy from close-range. Sheridan kicked a free in the second period to register the first score since the 53rd minute. Annanough pushed for an equaliser but they couldn't muster up any chances to score. Sheridan pointed a 45' late on to seal the victory as Annanough's Leinster campaign came to an end.
Glyde Rangers now go on to face Man O War from Dublin in the semi-finals.
