Goals prove key as Laois Camogie side make it three wins from three in the league

Pat Collier and Robert Jones’ Laois Camogie side have made it three wins from three games in this year’s Very Camogie Leagues as their side got the better of Roscommon in Ballyforan this afternoon.

Laois came into the game off the back of victories over Kildare and Armagh but were made to work for their victory over The Rossies.

Laois 2-9

Roscommmon 0-7

Laois were faced with playing into a stiff breeze in the opening half as Roscommon fired over the game’s first score. Shauna Fallon pointed from a free before Grainne Hyland got Laois off the mark early on. Alice Walsh was shown a yellow card for the next Roscommon score as he made a high tackle. Fallon made it two points for her and two points for Roscommon as she pointed the free.

Roscommon would push themselves two points ahead from the resulting puck-out as Aedin Lowry’s pass to Clodagh Tynan went over her head. Tynan then committed a foul with Fallon getting her side’s third point of the contest.

Roscommon were penalised on their own 21-yard line for Laois’ next score as they were adjudged to have thrown the ball. Aisling O’Dea stepped up to raise a white flag for Laois. Fallon got a fourth point of the game soon after as she pointed for the first time from play. Laois were given another easy opportunity to raise a white flag as Roscommon fouled the ball again before the referee brought the free up with O’Dea making no mistake from the placed ball.

It would be Roscommon that would go into the dressing rooms ahead as Fallon pointed for the fifth time from a free with the forward having scored all five of Roscommon’s points in the first-half. The home side led 0-5 to 0-3 at the break.

Laois made a blistering start to the second period as Jessie Quinlan rattled the back of the Roscommon net within the opening minute of the restart. Quinlan took her tally to 1-1 shortly after as she pointed a free for Laois. Half-back Karla Whelan scored a splendid point to give Laois a three-point lead.

Fallon (free) and Aiva Coss traded scores before Laois substitute Eimear Hassett raised a green flag. The St Brigid’s star played a ball towards goal which deceived the Roscommon goalie and dropped into the net.

Another Laois substitute got her name on the scoresheet as Aimee Collier pointed from play. Laois almost got their third goal of the contest but Susie Delaney’s effort was superbly saved by the Roscommon goalkeeper.

Fallon and Collier both scored a free each before Delaney got the game’s final score with a nicely executed shot. Laois winning out 2-9 to 0-7 to finish top of Division 3A which now means they’ll face Kildare in the semi-finals in two weeks’ time.
