As the Laois Camogie team gears up for a crucial quarter-final clash against Wicklow in the Leinster Intermediate Championship, joint-managers Pat Collier and Robert Jones have provided valuable insights into the team's mindset and preparations.
Pat Collier, one of the team's joint-managers, expressed satisfaction with the team's journey so far, despite a setback in the league final. "We had a great league," Collier remarked. "We were thrilled to get to the league final, and unfortunately, on the day, we missed a lot and weren't clinical up front." Collier highlighted the positive atmosphere within the camp, noting, "It's been a great camp since we started. We're in the middle of a good block of training at the moment."
Looking forward to the upcoming quarter-final at Laois Hire O’Moore Park, Collier emphasized the significance of returning to Laois county ground. "I think it's the first time in three to four years since we were in O’Moore Park, so that was a big lift for the girls when they were informed on Monday night," he added.
Reflecting on the defeat against Armagh in the league finals, Robert Jones highlighted the team's eagerness to bounce back. "All the girls are looking forward to it now, especially after our defeat against Armagh in the League Final," Jones explained. He acknowledged the importance of mental preparedness, admitting, "I think mentally we weren't prepared for it. We kind of underestimated Armagh coming into it after our first match with them in the league."
Jones emphasised the value of playing at Laois Hire O’Moore Park for his players. "A lot of these girls have been hurling with Laois Camogie now for the last number of years, and I don't think you could count on one hand the amount of times they've played in O’Moore Park," he shared.
In an important development, Robert Jones revealed the leadership roles within the team. "We announced our captain for the year last night as Liadan C Fennell, and our vice-captain is Fiona Scully," Jones disclosed.
With a packed schedule ahead, including a series of consecutive matches, Jones highlighted the importance of a large squad. "We have 34 on the panel, and we have a game every Saturday from now on, I think we've no break," Jones noted. "It's hugely important to have a big panel. Everyone is pushing for places."
Both managers echoed optimism and determination despite minor injuries within the team. "In the last couple of weeks, there's probably a few small niggles, but nothing major," Jones assured.
Should Laois be victorious on Saturday, they'll go on to face the winner of Carlow and Dublin in the semi-final on Saturday, May 18. The Leinster final is down for decision on May 25. Tickets for Saturday's game against Wicklow can be bought here. The game throws-in at 2pm on Saturday, May 5.
