Laois got their Leinster Intermediate Campaign off to an easy start as they eased to an incredible 42 point win over Wicklow. The gulf between the two sides was evident from the off as Laois flew out of the blocks and faced little resistance as they piled on the scores.

Susie Delaney pointed either side of two Aimee Collier frees before Delaney added another excellent score as she took her player on and pointed off the hurl. St Brigid’s duo Clodagh Tynan and Eimear Hassett pointed as Laois controlled proceedings.

Laois 7-23

Wicklow 0-2

Their lead was out to eleven points after thirteen minutes as they got the first of three first half goals. Delaney flew through the defence before smashing the ball home.

Collier and Delaney added further points before a shot for a point by Hassett fell into the net to give Laois a 2-10 to 0-0 lead on 19 minutes.

Collier pointed three frees before Kirsten Keenan got her first score of the day. Wicklow were trying their best to exit and a great catch in defence by Kila Kenny eventually led to Laura Smyth pointing from a free.

Despite the best efforts of Holly Byrne in the Wicklow goals, Laois would strike for another green flag with the final action of the half. Susie Delaney rifled in her second to finish the half with 2-4 from play and give Laois an astonishing 3-14 to 0-1 lead at the break.

Laois’ dominance continued in the second half as the substitutes were also keen to get onto the scoresheet. Rachel Deegan pointed from a tight angle before Kisten Keenan’s hard work paid off with a goal.

Deegan and Collier (free) pointed before Wicklow struck for their second point of the game on 39 minutes as Sophie Bermingham converted a monster free from half-way.

Grainne Hyland and Andrea Scully both struck for goals number five and six and the skillfull Aisling O’Dea added a fine score under pressure.

O’Dea then set up Aiva Coss for her first score of the game as both sides yearned for the final whistle. Collier added another free before Grainne Hyland got her second goal, placing the ball low into the left corner.

Wicklow did have somewhat of a bright spell for the final few minutes with Bermingham and Ciara Connolly getting on more ball but they could not find another score as Collier pointed the final score of the game to leave Laois 42 point winners. Laois now face Dublin in the semi-finals this weekend at home.
