Laois Aussie Rules star cheers on Portlaoise from Down Under

Former Portlaoise GAA star Zach Tuohy made sure to give his hometown club a show of support as part of a Geelong Cats initiative ahead of their Country Game against Essendon.

The Aussie Rules club have unveiled a regional guernsey for the game against Essendon, the shirt worn by Aussie Rules players, which includes the colours of every Geelong Cats player's junior or local club. Ireland-based GAA players Zach Tuohy (Portlaoise) Oisin Mullin (Mayo) and Mark O'Connor (Dingle) have their club colours represented on the commemorative guernsey.

Tuohy's AFL Career has been on an upward trajectory ever since he made the move to Australia where he began playing for Carlton. He stayed there there from 2011-2016 with 2017 being the year he got his move to Geelong.

He also holds the record for the most AFL games played by an Irish-born footballer with 272 appearances to his name. He went ahead of Jim Stynes after Round 17 of the 2023 season. Tuohy and Mark O'Connor were part of the 2022 championship-winning team Geelong Cats which means that they became only the second and third Irish players to win an AFL Premiership.
