Willie Maher has announced that he has stepped down as Laois Senior hurling manager effective immediately.
Laois tasted league glory in 2024 as they immediately bounced back to Division 1, having been relegated in 2023, when they defeated Carlow in the Division 2A final in March. They also reached the final of the Joe McDonagh Cup in June but unfortunately came out on the wrong side of the result as Offaly won by three points.
In a statement posted to CLG Laois’ social media accounts, Maher had this to say on his time as Laois manager.
”After careful consideration, I have decided to step down from my position as Manager of the Laois Senior Hurling Team effective immediately.
“This decision was not made lightly, but after much reflection, I believe it is the right time for me to step away at this point. I am proud of what we achieved together during my tenure and grateful for the dedication and hard work of the players, coaching staff, and supporters.
“A special thank you to Eamon Jackman and Sean Flynn who, apart from being exceptionally innovative and brilliant coaches, provided me with sound council and advice through the challenges and opportunities that come with managing and achieving high performance with an elite group of sportsmen. Our Strength and Conditioning Coach David Moriarty was a super addition to our team in 2024 and the players benefited considerably in their athletic development.
“By winning Division 2 in 2024 we have earned the right to play in Division 1 hurling in 2025 and were a puck of a ball away from a return to the Leinster Senior Championship. The transition of 7 new players into the McDonagh final team is testament to the quality of players coming through in Laois and I have no doubt that the team is set up for success with all players available in the county committing to our senior panel in 2024.
“I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the players, the backroom team, the county board and, of course, supporters for their unwavering support during my tenure. It has been a privilege to manage such a talented and committed group and to be a part of the wonderful Laois Hurling community.
”Finally, I would like to thank my family and the families of all involved in the Laois senior hurling playing and back-roomteams. Your support and understanding allows us all the opportunity to compete to the highest standards of performance. We appreciate it and the impact that has on our loved ones.
”I wish the team every success in the future and will always remain a passionate supporter of Laois hurling.
“Sincerely, William Maher,” the statement said.
Laois GAA Chairperson PJ Kelly paid tribute to Maher for his time as Laois manager.
”We sincerely thank Willie Maher and his entire backroom team for their hard work and dedication throughout the 2023 and 2024 seasons. During his term at the helm he has progressed our Senior Hurling panel with success in Division 2 League Final and to a Joe McDonagh Cup Final, where a very competitive display against Offaly almost seen our return to Leinster Senior Hurling championship for 2025.
We wish Willie Maher the very best in his future endeavours,” PJ Kelly said.
Laois will want to get a new manager as soon as possible with the Laois Club Championships set to get underway on Wednesday, July 17.
