It’s been a long 10 years since Killeshin last lifted the Laois LGFA Junior Championship trophy, and they’re eager to reclaim it on Friday evening against St Paul’s in Annanough.

Players Philomena Haughney and Ciara Malone, along with their FLO Clare Malone, shared their thoughts at the Laois LGFA media night held at the LOETB Portlaoise Institute last Friday.

Haughney expressed that everything they’ve worked for over the past decade culminates in this game.

“This is it for us. We’re ready and can’t wait for next Friday to get the job done and bring home the cup,” she said.

She also highlighted the team’s diversity, featuring players of all ages, including some who were part of the 2014 squad.

“I wasn’t on that team because I was pregnant, but many of the girls are back, and we have a fantastic mix. With 35 players in the squad, we know what we need to achieve next Friday,” she added.

On their path to the final, Killeshin triumphed over Timahoe and The Heath, demonstrating determination in both matches.

“We gave it everything. We knew we had to fight for every ball, and that’s exactly what we did,” Haughney said.

Younger player Ciara Malone, who also played for the Laois team this year, is looking forward to creating her own memories in this championship.

“I was just eight years old in 2014, so I don’t really remember it. I’m hoping to make some fond memories this year,” Malone shared.

After a busy football season, she’s eager to finish strong with a cup in hand against St Paul’s.

“I’ve been playing all year, and it would be brilliant to cap off this long season with a win in the final. We didn’t finish our Laois season until just before the championship, so it feels great to be back with the team,” she said.

The mix of experienced players and youth in the team is a significant advantage, especially with veterans who know what it takes to win a county final.

“We have a few older girls who were on the last winning team, and they’re fantastic role models. They motivate the younger players and push everyone to perform,” Malone noted.

FLO Clare Malone, who was part of the 2014 team, understands what it takes to succeed and emphasised the team's preparation.

“Our training sessions have been excellent. We’ve been preparing since January, and the commitment from everyone has been fantastic. We’re all focused on one goal: to win the county final after 10 years,” Clare said.

Fitness will be crucial for Killeshin in the final, and Malone is optimistic about their chances.

“Our strength is our fitness. We have a great group of girls who are fit and ready. That will be our biggest asset on Friday. We know St Paul’s will be a tough opponent, but we’re prepared to give it our all,” she stated.

With a blend of youth and experience, Killeshin is well-equipped for the challenge ahead.

“There are several players who have been with the team since our last county final. The competition for places is fierce, and the older players are guiding the younger ones on what it takes to win. We believe we have the right panel and management to succeed,” Clare concluded.
