Delaney leads the way as Portlaoise crowned Junior Camogie champions

Portlaoise are the 2024 Martin Reddin Junior Camogie champions after a superb display saw them over the line against St Lazarian's in Saturday's County Final.

Susie Delaney was the star of the show with nine points for The Town with Ciara Crowley, Aileen O'Neill and Aisling McAuley putting on impressive displays in the Portlaoise back-line.

Portlaoise 1-10

St Lazarian's 1-3

St Lazarian's got the scoring underway as Niamh O'Shea split the posts with two minutes on the clock. Laois star Susie Delaney got Portlaoise on the scoreboard a minute later with a superb point from the sideline. The game went end to end for next few periods of play with Delaney giving Portlaoise a two points to one advantage.

Delaney was causing the St Lazarian's defence all sorts of problems as she saw her shot on goal saved onto the post by Grace Foxe in the St Lazarian's goal. Delaney stepped up and converted the resulting 45'. Portlaoise's goal came soon after as they grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck. Grainne O'Reilly played a ball into the square and Savannah Lawless was on hand to flick the ball into the net off her hurl.

Portlaoise took their tally to 1-4 as Delaney added a fourth point to her name from a free. St Lazarian's broke a 23-minute spell without a score as Katie Doyle found the back of the net after Cara Phelan had batted down a high ball. Portlaoise ended the half with a point each from Amy Byrne and Delaney (free) to give The Town a 1-6 to 1-1 lead at the break.

St Lazarian's would reduce the Portlaoise lead to just three points as they got the first two scores of the half courtesy of Kaylee O'Keeffe and Katie Dunican. The Junior champions showed their class however as they got the next four scores. Delaney was the scorer of all four as she took her total to nine points to put Portlaoise well on their way to victory.

Portlaoise will get a bye to the semi-finals of the Leinster Club Championship where they'll face the winners of Wicklow and Offaly.
