Portarlington have fallen at the first hurdle in this year's AIB Leinster Club Senior Football Championship after Wicklow's Tinahely came away with the win in Laois Hire O'Moore Park on Sunday afternoon.
Tinahely 2-5
Portarlington 0-10
It was the Laois champions who got the first score on the board as Jordan Fitzpatrick was fouled which allowed Jake Foster to slot a free over the bar. Paddy O'Rourke got Tinahely's first of the game before Portarlington raised three white flags on the trot. Pat Roe's side won the ball back in midfield and the ball ended up going over off the boot of Jason Moore. Rioghan Murphy played a brilliant ball into the hands of full-forward Darragh Galvin and he pointed the resulting mark.
Foster then forced Alan Nolan into a great save after Ronan Coffey and Galvin had combined earlier in the move. Alex Mohan came forward from corner-back to push Portarlington four points to one in front after 11 minutes. Tinahely's reply was the best they could have hoped for as Cillian McDonald's superb pass found Matthew Ging and he drilled the ball past Luke O'Reilly in the Portarlington goals.
Rioghan Murphy scored a great point off his left foot before Tinahely got a second goal courtesy of Eoin Darcy. Coffey pointed a free after a foul on Murphy was brought forward. Tinahely got the next two scores as Ging pointed from play and from a free to end the first-half with the Wicklow side ahead 2-3 to 0-6.
Portarlington had a great start to the second period as they kept Tinahely scoreless for the first 18 minutes of the half as well as scoring three points to level the game. Foster kicked two scores from play with Coffey kicking over a free.
Tinahely only scored two points in the second-half but they'd all their work done in the first-half. Darcy added a point from a free to his earlier goal with Ging also taking his tally to 1-3 to put Tinahely two ahead with 56 minutes played. Galvin had a great chance for goal two minutes before that but his goal-bound effort was saved and went out for a 45', goalkeeper Luke O'Reilly kicked the 45' wide.
Coffey got his third point of the contest to set up a nervy ending but Portarlington couldn't muster up a scoring opportunity to send the game to extra-time. Tinahely go on to face Tullamore in the quarter-finals next weekend.
