St Brigid's with the Leinster Intermediate Camogie cup
Brian Bowe’s St Brigid’s side etched their names into the history books, clinching their first-ever Leinster title with a narrow one-point win over Naas in Tullamore on Sunday afternoon.
“It’s absolutely huge, I don't even know what to say anymore. The county final was a dream, and this was always too,” Bowe said, overwhelmed by the victory. “When we won the county final, this was the dream, the bigger dream to win this, and it's unbelievable, over the moon.”
Reflecting on the fiercely contested final, Bowe credited the depth of his squad for the historic achievement against a formidable Naas team.
“Every girl from 1 to 15, to the five that came on, we said it after the county final—they're just an unbelievable bunch,” Bowe praised. “I don't think there are any other words for them anymore. We knew Naas were going to come here, we knew we were going to have to take all that pressure in the first half. We sucked it up and in the second half the girls really showed what they're made of. Absolutely unbelievable effort to pull it out of the hat there. Naas are a very, very good side; they were never going to be beaten easy here today.”
St Brigid’s Camogie Club, a blend of four different communities, has formed a united and tight-knit team. Bowe marveled at the bond between the girls despite their different backgrounds.
“The girls are just brilliant. Even when I came in this year, they're just such a united club,” he explained. “To have four clubs so together is just unbelievable; they're all best friends. They just do everything together. I don't even know if they have any friends outside of the camogie, because they're just such a together bunch. The last two weeks we've just completely focused on making history here today, and they've done it now, we're delighted.”
With an All-Ireland semi-final on the horizon, Bowe is confident that his team has what it takes to go further.
“Everyone wants to dream bigger, don't they? And now it's in front of us, why not go for it,” Bowe said. “All we have to do now is go for it, and with this bunch of girls, anything is possible.”
The challenge ahead is significant, with St Brigid’s set to face reigning All-Ireland champions Clanmaurice from Kerry in Tipperary in two weeks' time. Bowe has already done his homework on their next opponents.
“We have the Kerry champions in two weeks in Tipperary,” he noted. “I went to watch the Munster final last week to do a bit of reconnaissance just in case we got through here today. We'll have our work cut out for us, but as I said already, these girls are up for any battle.”
Before signing off, Bowe took a moment to recognise the commitment of his backroom team, who have been an invaluable support since he took over as manager in February.
“Pat (Delaney) is the girls' number one; no one’s going to take that spot off Pat,” Bowe said with a smile. “Then we have Mick, Joe, and Mary, they've been there the last three years. Since I came back in February, they've been a huge help to me. They've given up their last three years for these girls; no one thinks any more of these girls than them.”
