The draw for the preliminary quarter-finals of the Tailteann Cup has been made on Sunday evening, with Laois handed a tough away trip to Westmeath to be played on the weekend of June 7/ June 8.
Laois finished on four points in Group 2 alongside Offaly and Wicklow. It was the latter who finished top of the group on points difference after they hammered Waterford 3-29 to 0-21. Laois' dramatic two-point victory over Offaly wasn't enough for Justin McNulty's side to leapfrog their neighbours in the standings so Laois finished third, which meant they had to be drawn away from in the preliminary quarter-finals.
Westmeath finished second in Group 3 having beaten Antrim and London in their opening two games, but were defeated by Limerick in a top of the table clash in Portlaoise on Saturday.
A win for Laois next weekend would see them drawn away to a county that finished top of their group (Limerick, Fermanagh or Kildare).
The full draw is as follows:
Offaly v New York
Sligo v Carlow
Wexford v Antrim
Westmeath v Laois
The exact fixture details are not yet known, but it'll likely be on Saturday, June 7, as the Laois hurlers are playing in the Joe McDonagh Cup final in Croke Park on Sunday, June 8 at 1.45pm.
