Laois and Clough-Ballacolla hurler Willie Dunphy has announced his retirement from inter-county hurling, bringing to a close a remarkable 14-year career with the Laois senior team.
Dunphy made his senior debut in 2011, while still eligible to play U-21, and shared the news on Instagram on New Year’s Eve 2025 with a simple post: “Agus Sin É. 2011—> 2025,” marking the end of his inter-county journey.
Dunphy played a central role in one of Laois’ most memorable seasons in recent history. In 2019, he helped Laois capture the Joe McDonagh Cup with a standout victory over Westmeath. That triumph was followed by another historic win the following week, when Laois defeated Dublin in Portlaoise in an All-Ireland Preliminary Quarter-Final, making them the only Joe McDonagh Cup winners to advance past the preliminary stage. Their impressive campaign ended in an All-Ireland Quarter-Final loss to eventual champions Tipperary at Croke Park.
Over his career, Dunphy also collected two National League titles with Laois, winning Division 2A in 2013 and again in 2024. He served as Laois captain as recently as 2023.
At club level, Dunphy continues to be a key player for Clough-Ballacolla, enjoying tremendous success over the years with eight Laois Senior Hurling Championship medals to his name. His first title came in 2009, and his eighth arrived in 2025, helping the club secure five championships in six years. Dunphy was particularly influential in Clough-Ballacolla’s Leinster Club SHC campaign in 2025. He scored two goals in their quarter-final win over Westmeath side Castletown-Geoghegan before scoring four points in their semi-final against Shamrocks Ballyhale, as Clough-Ballacolla came close to a remarkable upset.
While injuries hampered the latter stages of his inter-county career, Dunphy’s contribution to Laois hurling cannot be overstated. He leaves the inter-county scene with a legacy of leadership, dedication, and achievement, while continuing to make his mark at club level.
