Laois GAA referee hangs up the whistle after years of service

Conny Dunne praised for fairness, wit, and dedication across all codes of Gaelic games

A respected Laois GAA referee has brought his long refereeing career to a close, with tributes paid to Conny Dunne following his retirement.

Dunne, a member of Clonaslee St Manman’s GAA Club, officiated games across the county for many years, covering all codes of Gaelic games at both men’s and ladies’ levels. Known for his fairness and calm approach, he earned widespread respect from players, managers and supporters alike.

On social media, his club paid tribute, saying: “On behalf of the entire club, we would like to say thank you and best wishes to Conny Dunne as he retires from refereeing. Over the course of his refereeing career, he has covered all codes of Gaelic games both men's and ladies the length and breadth of the county. Never one to shy away from the tough decisions, but always delivered with his well-renowned quick wit. A great servant to our club and county, and no doubt he'll continue to be a loyal supporter of both for years to come.”

Tributes also came from the Irish United Nations Veterans Association Portlaoise Post 27, who wrote: “IUNVA Portlaoise Post 27 would like to extend our warmest congratulations and best wishes to Conny Dunne on his retirement as a GAA referee. His dedication and commitment to CLG Laois over the years have not gone unnoticed, and while his retirement is a great loss to the GAA community in Laois, it will surely be a welcome gain for Post 27. Well done, Conny. His presence will be greatly missed throughout the county, and we look forward to seeing more of him with us in the years ahead.”

While his departure from refereeing will be a loss to the Laois GAA community, Conny won’t be disappearing entirely. He can still be spotted at Laois Hire O’Moore Park and the LOETB Centre of Excellence, keeping order in the car park.

Best wishes in your retirement, Conny.
