Ballyroan Abbey’s Padraig McMahon has opted off the Laois Senior Football panel due to work commitments.
On the panel since 2005, McMahon is the latest experienced player to opt out.
Speaking after Sunday’s win over Roscommon, Laois manager Tomás Ó Flatharta explained the situation.
“Padraig is a very busy man. He’s a teacher and he’s a farmer as well. We had a long discussion, the two of us, at the beginning of the year. He felt that he wasn’t able to commit because of teaching and farming. We tried to work it out. He did come in with us but during the week he came to me again and he said he couldn’t do it.
“He was caught for time and I suppose cows won’t wait until a training session is over and you can go home then and they’ll have the calf. That’s the reality of it. Padraig is opting out for a few weeks. I’m not sure if we’ve seen the end of it or not but we have to respect how busy he is. He hasn’t closed the door yet on himself taking part in the rest of the year.”
