A fundraising initiative organised by Laois senior football and hurling stars will see players from both codes take part in an eagerly awaited ‘Battle of the O’Moores’ Fight Night on January 21.
There is expected to be ten fights over the course of the evening involving players from both panels, and the full list of players taking part is almost complete. So far, the following names have been confirmed from the football panel: Brendan Quigley, Colm Begley, Colm Coss, Colm Munnelly, Darren Maher, Darren Strong, Eoin Culliton, Kevin Meaney, Marty Dowling, Niall Donoher and Peter O’Leary.
The hurlers are still waiting for confirmation from one more participant, but so far Matthew Whelan, Neil Foyle, Gearoid Gaughan, Eoin Reilly, Andrew Collier, Gearoid Burke, Darryl Dooley, JJ McHugh and Darren Maher have all signed up to the event. All the intending participants will still have to undergo a medical early in the new year, however, with the pairings set to be announced the week before the Fight Night takes place.
There will also be two exhibition bouts on the night involving young boxers from the Portlaoise Boxing Club, while John Lowry from Timahoe will be acting as DJ
All money raised from this event will go towards the players training fund for the forthcoming year. The footballers are in Division 1 and kick off the NFL with a home tie with Mayo, while the hurlers, in their first year with former Cork star Teddy McCarthy, will play a Division 2 opener against Offaly.
A large crowd of 800 is expected to go ring side for the event with tickets currently selling very well. Tickets are available from both panels at a cost of €20 or also from the Laois GAA offices at 05786-60674
Sponsorship for both fights and boxers is also available. Any businesses interested in advertising as part of the event can contact Tomas Moore in the office at the above number.
