Holy Family NS claimed their first Cumann na mBunscol football title last Wednesday, as they held off a strong Abbeyleix side to win by a goal.

The newly formed school wasted little time in adding some silverware to the trophy cabinet, as they withheld a strong second half comeback from Abbeyleix.

Holy Family raced into an early lead, as two frees from Barry Fitzpatrick and a point from play by Conor Raggett had them in control. Abbeyleix opened their account in the 14th minute, as Liam Kavanagh's free was deflected over the bar.

That was their only score of the half, as Fitzpatrick hammered a close range free to the net for Holy Family, and Matthew Coonan added a point to see them lead 1-4 to 0-1 at the break.

Abbeyleix got an ideal start to the second half thanks to a goal from Adam Ellis, and Colin Byrne added a point moments later. Matthew Coonan hit back with a point for Holy Family before a stunning JJ Toman goal put them six up.

They were forced to hang on after that, as Abbeyleix launched a furious bid to get back on level terms. Colin Byrne, Adam Ellis and Adrian Dunne all pointed to leave just a goal in it with time almost up, but the score they needed wouldn't come, as Holy Family held on.
