Portarlington hold off Timahoe comeback

Girls Allianz Roinn 8 Final

Presentation Portarlington held off a remarkable second half comeback from Scoil Mhuire Fatima Timahoe on Tuesday last to claim the girls Division 8 title by just two points.

The Portarlington girls were winning by 15 points at half time and looked to be home and hosed, but they were met with a different Timahoe side on the restart. They almost pulled off one of the most remarkable comebacks in recent history, but fell just short in the end.

The game was evenly contested for the opening ten minutes, as Portarlington took an early lead through a Madison McGettrick goal, and a point from Aoibhe Hoary. Emma Killeen matched those scores for Timahoe, leaving the teams tied at 1-1 each at the end of the first quarter.

Port clicked into gear after that, however, and the scores started to rain in from everywhere. Aoibhe Hoary got their second goal before Ava Luttrell hit two in two minutes, as the momentum was right behind the Port girls. McGettrick tagged on a point and Luttrell got her third goal, before points from Luttrell and Niamh Fenlon had Port 5-4 to 1-1 up at the break.

They looked in no danger now, but Timahoe would prove otherwise. Sophie Phelan hit an early goal for them and Emma Killeen added a point. Phelan soon got a second goal and Niamh Fenlon responded with a point for Port.

Timahoe kept coming though, and Emma Killeen added two goals and another point to leave just two between the teams with two minutes to go, but they couldn't get closer than that.
