The proposed new astroturf pitch for Mountrath GAA at Russ Avenue is in jeopardy following an appeal lodged to Laois County Council last week.

Last year the club lodged a planning application with the intention to build an astroturf area with associated lighting and fencing, erection of lighting on both sides of the main pitch, the removal of the portacabin and the construction of a small shed. Only last month the project was given the green light by the County Planners with 12 conditions.

Previous objections to the project included noise and light intrusion on nearby residents, flooding concerns, and the potential damage to the habitat of the bat population in the area.

An appeal has been lodged with An Bord Pleanala, with their decision not expected until September.
