Setanta gets up and running

The past week has seen a hive of activity with all the Setanta groups in action.

The past week has seen a hive of activity with all the Setanta groups in action.

The U-12 and U-13 group held a very successful four day camp in Clonad. County players, Brian Guilfoyle, Nathan Unwin and Picky Maher were the coaches under the supervision of new GDA Andrew Kavanagh.

The main coaching points of the entire Setanta program are Tackling and Catching. Players are always encouraged to catch the ball rather than control it on the hurl. Setanta says “My Hand is my First Touch”. By the end of the week all the players were putting this into practice.

All players received a new Setanta jersey and wore it with great pride. The standard of hurling was very high and all the players had a great week. The future for Laois hurling is bright with these players.

The U-10 and U-11 group is set up on a Regional basis. The Northern Rebels are based in Rosenallis, the Western Warriors are based in Mountrath, the Southern Soldiers are based in Rathdowney while the Eastern Eagles are based in Clonad. Great credit is due to the army of up to 10 coaches who volunteer their time with these groups.

Like the U-12 and U-13 group, the high catch is the main coaching point that is practiced along with first touch and shooting on the run. Each session is the same in each region with the coaches working from a lesson plan that progresses from session to session.

Therefore all the players around the county are receiving the same coaching. On Saturday in Rathleague almost 80 players, eight coaches and hoardes of family members gathered in Rathleague for the annual inter-regional blitz.

Each team got three games against teams from other regions. Despite the weather, a great morning was had by all. Our pictures below show the players and coaches who were there on the morning. Next up is the 3 day camp in Clonad starting on 7th August.
