Ballyfin come through in goal fest

Despite a fantastic five goals from Clonaslee’s DJ Callaghan, Ballyfin overcame a five point half-time deficit to claim a four point win.

At the end of an incredible first-half, Clonaslee were ahead by 7-0 to 4-4 but despite the best efforts of the outstanding Cian Barrett at the back for Clonaslee, Ballyfin came roaring with Allen Connolly scoring 1-3 of their impressive 1-8 in the second 20 minutes.

Clonaslee got off to a flier with a goal from Callaghan but Ballyfin hit back with Niall Fitzpatrick and Morgan Carroll finding the back of the net.

Cian Barrett levelled matters with a goal from a long range free before DJ Callaghan, who showed a remarkable ability to pull high balls out of the air throughout the game, put Clonaslee back in front with nine minutes on the clock.

The frantic opening continued with an equalising goal from Morgan Carroll after Clonaslee goalkeeper Lee Fitzpatrick had initially made a great save and Ballyfin edged in front with the first point after the game from Luke Rigney after 15 minutes.

Clonaslee were still hammering home goals with DJ Callaghan hitting four more before the half-time whistle. Ballyfin kept in touch with points from Niall Fitzpatrick, the excellent Allen Connolly and the very impressive Luke Rigney with Rigney also scoring a crucial goal before the break to reduce the gap to five.

After the restart with the wind now behind them, Ballyfin set about overhauling Clonaslee with points from Allen Connolly, Luke Rigney and Cillian Fitzpatrick.

A fine point from Cian Barrett put Clonaslee back into a three point lead but two points from Allen Connolly and a hotly debated goal from the same player edged Ballyfin in front. Connolly struck a low, powerful free towards the the Clonaslee goal. Goalkeeper Lee Fitzpatrick got his hurl to it and the ball flew high and it initially looked like it went over the bar. However the umpire on the spot immediately signalled that the ball went through the net for a goal which put Ballyfin in front.

A point apiece followed from Luke Rigney and Cian Barrett to leave Ballyfin with a two point lead but they closed out the game with points from Cillian Fitzpatrick and Allen Connolly.
