The double is still on for St Mary’s Edenderry as they shattered the Leinster title ambitions of Portlaoise CBS in the Colleges junior football ‘B’ semi final at McCann Park in Portarlington on Friday with a comprehensive victory that confirmed their firm favourite’s status.
St Mary’s Edenderry 3-13
Portlaoise CBS 1-5
Two months after they won the South Leinster title Portlaoise came up against the North Leinster champions buoyed by their senior squad’s victory in the All Ireland ‘A’ colleges final and that gulf in standards certainly looked evident by the time the full time whistle sounded.
Despite a courageous first half performance by the CBS lads once Edenderry hit the front and then aided by a strong breeze in the second half they were in control all over the pitch and ran out more than comfortable winners.
With a number of All Ireland winning senior players in their ranks Edenderry were just too strong in most departments and that experience of playing in and winning in the premier grade was certainly a huge boost to them but Portlaoise to their credit battled to the very end and got few breaks along the way.
Edenderry were just too strong all over the park and had too many quality players of senior standard in their ranks. They played a superb brand of team football and hit super scores from all angles and distance. Portlaoise tried to stay with them but the gulf was just too great and the second half saw them canter to victory as they completely dominated.
