Laois played host to Down on what was the sunniest day of the week in Rathdowney GAA grounds on Saturday, as they picked up a much-needed victory in the All-Ieland series.
Laois lead by as many as four points in the opening half but when the half time whistle, the teams were tied at 1-4 to 0-7 at the break.
Down had their noses in front in the second-half but Laois corner forward Laura Marie Maher struck home with a brilliant strike to put Laois ahead by a point on the 55th minute.
Down responded and Catherine McGrourty put them ahead again with two points from placed balls, the second from a 45 after the Laois goalkeeper made a brilliant diving save. With the final whistle looming Laura Marie Maher locked on to a long ball and showing her football skills dribbled passed two Down defenders before kicking the sliotar into the net for her second goal and putting Laois back in front by two points.
A late Down free wasn’t enough for them, and Laois held on for a great victory.
