In the last of the weekends games in O’Moore Park on Sunday last, a thrilling games was played out between Portarlington and Ballyroan Abbey where a dramatic conclusion saw Portarlington claim victory in the dying minutes following a neck-and-neck contest throughout.
With the rain pelting down, and the pitch looking a bit worst for wear, Ballyroan Abbey raced out of the blocks to go 1-1 ahead after just three minutes, with Paudie McDonald responsible for the 1-1. McDonald expertly applied a critical finish for the goal before pushing Ballyroan four points ahead with his, and the game’s first major.
But the Ballyroan Abbey dominance wasn’t to continue as Portarlington bounced straight back to claim three consecutive goals in eight minutes to stun the opposition.Ronan Coffey and Eoin Kenneddy proved a powerful full-forward line as they both emphatically smashed their shots into the roof of the Ballyroan net before Alex Mohan sealed the hat-trick of goals, when his long-range effort took a sudden dip to deceive crept under the crossbar.
Right on the stroke of half time Ballyroan claimed a crucial goal with Paudie McDonald and Charlie Whelan combining excellently to open up the Portarlington defence and gift Whelan with the goal opprtunity which he duly converted to leave just four points separating the sides at half time.
The second half kicked off with a bang with an early exchange of points between Paudie McDonald and Colin Slevin, before Niall Phelan rounded off the attack with a tidy finish to claim a goal and reduce the Ballyroan deficit to a single point. Charlie Whelan and Ronan Coffey added points for their respective sides before before pulled in front through Diarmuid Whelan and Paudie McDonald.
A late rally from Portarlington, and three points from the composed Jordan Fallon, stole the game from Ballyroan’s grasp and broke Ballyroan Abbey hearts in the process as Portarlington sealed a dramatic two point victory.
