Laois hurling received a much needed boost with this terrific victory, as the county minor hurlers showed great heart and determination to come from behind to beat a fancied Westmeath side in a thriller at Cusack Park in Mullingar on Saturday.

The victory here sets up a mouth-watering clash with Kilkenny in the next round of the Leinster MHC.
Westmeath had held the upper hand in recent meetings of the counties and were strong favourites coming into this clash, and for long periods looked as they would confirm that status, but a real battling display by Cheddar Plunkett’s charges saw them twice come from behind in the second half and seal a great victory in the dying minutes.
They got a great start with two goals in the opening six minutes, but they then fell three points in arrears by the 27th minute of the game, only to hit the final four points of the half to lead by 2-6 to 1-8 at the break. By the seventh minute of the second half they trailed by four points and still were two points in arrears, when Ben Conroy struck for the all important winning goal with two minutes left on the clock.
