After a near 20 minute delay while Clonaslee awaited the arrival of their jerseys, Portlaoise almost made the perfect start but Martin Staunton’s powerful shot rattled the underside of the crossbar.
Clonaslee opened the scoring after six minutes through Ger Dunne but his opposite number Murray Rogers responded with two of his own ot put Portlaoise in front. Portlaoise had five wides in the opening 15 minutes and overall poor finishing and a reluctance to shoot proved costly.
Thomas Tynan levelled matters for Clonaslee but Mark Kavanagh and Ricky Maher put Portlaoise two in front late in the half. Clonaslee responded with a goal after a breakdown in the Portlaoise defence left three players through on goalkeeper Graham Brody and Tynan applied the finish to the empty net. Dean Cullen and Tynan exchanged points late in the half to leave Clonaslee 1-3 to 0-5 ahead at the break.
It was nip and tuck for most of the second-half with Clonaslee finding themselves three clear entering the final ten minutes. Michael Hyland’s goal from close range, which hit the back stanchion and came out after Will Young had first rattled the crossbar, put six between the sides. They almost had a third goal but Niall Corbett’s snapshot was brilliantly saved off the line by Dara McAuley.
Clonaslee dropped back deep to defend in the final five minutes inviting Portlaoise on but they only conceded two points from Ricky Maher and Dean Cullen as they held on for the win.
