Intermediate Football Championship Rd 2

Annanough 1-9

The Rock 1-8

Having needed an injury time winner from John Scully in their first game against Kilcavan, it was James Miller who was the hero this time around, as he struck late to inflict another defeat on The Rock.

They deserved it too, having been that bit more clinical than a Rock side which wasted well over ten scoring opportunities in the game.

The Rock had looked the sharper in the opening quarter with Paul Dunne hitting a brace which were added to by Aaron Dowling and a David Murphy free. Annanough’s only score was a Daniel Carroll 45.

The second quarter was thrill a minute stuff as two frees from Carroll and James Miller narrowed the gap to the minimum by the 18th minute.

Three minutes later The Rock took the initiative when Ciaran Carroll picked out Shane O’Connell in behind the defence and he displayed all his soccer skills to flick the ball to the net with the outside of his boot.

With two minutes to half-time Annanough got a lucky break when Ciaran Hennessy’s shot from all of 30 metres deceived Brendan Dalton and slipped under the bar for a fortuitous goal. Another Miller free sent the sides into the break level.

Points from Diarmuid Dooley, Murphy (free) and O’Connell had the Rock three ahead 10 minutes into the half, but they were not to score for another 17 minutes as Annanough took control.James Miller had the sides level by the 20 minutes with three points, two from frees.

David Murphy edged The Rock back in front but two late points from James Miller edged Annanough over the line in the end.
