The ground of Killeshin GAA club rang out with cries of ‘There’s only one Cascarino’ on Sunday afternoon as former Irish soccer international Tony Cascarino was unveiled as their manager for the latest edition of the RTE series ‘Celebrity Bainisteoir’.
The Killeshin players were locked away in their dressing room with the windows blacked out awaiting the arrival of their new Messiah, and they did not find out who they would be getting until Cascarino walked through the door.
He then took the squad for the first of five training sessions ahead of the start of the competition, where they will meet Ballyporeen of Tipperary, who are managed by Gillian Quinn, wife of one of Cascarino’s old team mates, Niall Quinn.
Speaking of Cascarino’s arrival, club chairman Mark O’Regan admitted it has created a fantastic atmosphere in the area. “I think he’s the best of the manager’s that were in it. It has been brilliant, and we’ve gotten good sponsrship out of the whole thing as well, with signs around the pitch and sponsorship for the scoreboard, the lads have gotten tracksuits as well, it has been brilliant.”
The next step for Killeshin is to secure home advantage for their game against Ballyporeen, and to do that, four of the squad will have to don swimming togs and go to the National Aquatic centre.
Each club is set a series of challenges against their future opponents, and Stephen Attride, Ronan Phelan, Jeff McDermott and Eoin Farrell will all swim one length of the 50m pool in the centre in a relay race against four of the Ballyporeen team.
That will take place next Monday, with Cascarino taking another training session afterwards ahead of the game, which is due to be played some time in August.
Other celebrities taking part in the series include comedian PJ Gallagher, singer and politician Dana and former TD Paul Gogarty. The series is set to be aired on RTE in September.
