Garda probe launched after woman is assaulted in Midland town

Gardaí have launched an investigation after a woman in her fifties was assaulted inside the grounds of The Mall in Longford town during the early hours of this morning.
A Garda crime scene cordon has been set up within the grounds of Longford’s Albert Reynolds Peace Park, otherwise known as the Mall, in the aftermath of the incident.
A garda spokesperson confirmed that while no arrests have been made, an investigation is underway.
“Gardaí are investigating an assault which occurred in Longford town in the early hours of this morning, Monday 7th August 2023.
“A woman (50s) was taken to Midlands Regional Hospital Mullingar to be treated for what is believed to be non life-threatening injuries.
“Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this incident to come forward.”
Longford Municipal District Cathaoirleach Cllr Martin Monaghan condemned the incident at what is arguably one of the county town’s most popular civic amenities.
“I have never heard of an assault, never mind an incident of that nature in The Mall,” he said.
“The Gardaí, I imagine, will be checking and cross checking CCTV coming in and out of The Mall and I would be urging anyone who was in the area or who might have seen what happened to come forward because this needs to be nipped in the bud.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact Longford Garda Station on (043) 3350570, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.
Investigations are ongoing.
