The Heavy Goods Vehicle hit a bridge in Portlaoise

Gardai arrested the driver of a Heavy Goods Vehicle that hit a railway bridge in Portlaoise earlier today.

The incident happened this afternoon on the Mountmellick Road in Portlaoise. It resulted in delays to train services between Dublin and Cork and Portlaoise and Ballybrophy.

Gardai posted images on social media of the lorry which was involved in the collision this evening.

“Portlaoise Gardaí were called to a bridge strike on Coote Street, where an HGV struck the railway bridge,” they stated.

“HGV moved away safely, and the driver arrested and charged for dangerous driving. The HGV was out of tax for 219 days and was also seized,” Gardai added.

Irish Rail said the incident resulted in delays of around 35 minutes to the 3pm train between Hueston Station in Dublin and Cork.
