Cllr James Kelly campaigned for Cllr Aisling Moran
The predictability of Laois politically could not be overcome by independent candidate Aisling Moran, according to one her main supporters.
Cllr James Kelly backed his Laois County Council independent colleague in the Laois General Election race. Cllr Kelly spoke about the outcome at the Laois General Election Count Centre.
"We knew from the start it was going to be asked and we had a three-week window to do it. It was one of the best election campaigns that I have been on. We engaged a lot with the people.
"We got to the towns, villages and housing estates but it was very difficult to get to rural areas given the time we had," he said.
Cllr Kelly, who was also joined in the campaign by Cllr Ben Brennan and Cllr Tommy Mulligan, believes the Cllr Moran's loss is not surprising given the constituency make-up.
"Laois is one of the most predictable constituencies in the country but we did believe we had a chance...but I have to say well done to Aisling Moran and the campaign team that she put together. It has been very enjoyable campaign but not a successful one," he said.
Cllr Moran was eliminated after the seventh count after securing 3,652 votes.
