The John Duggan Memorial Cup, an annual golf event commemorating the late John Duggan, saw a record-breaking turnout this year. Held on Friday, August 2, the event welcomed 107 players, surpassing the 100-player mark for the first time since its inception.

John Duggan, a former teacher at St. Mary's CBS Portlaoise who passed away in April 2021, is fondly remembered through this tournament. The event saw players from 17 clubs across Ireland compete in the tournament. This year’s competition, played in a Singles Stableford format, was a testament to Duggan’s enduring legacy and the community’s love for the sport.

The organisers extended their gratitude to Sean Tobin for his excellent role as captain this year and welcomed Stan Walsh as the new captain for next year. Special thanks were given to Portlaoise Golf Club for their support and for helping attract new participants.

Looking ahead, the organisers plan to keep costs down for participants and aim to host the 2025 event at the Heritage Golf Club. "We hope everyone enjoyed the day and kept John in your thoughts," said Kevin Sheehan, who also expressed his appreciation for the sponsors who contributed fantastic prizes. These include The Maldron Hotel Portlaoise, Downey's Centra, Kevin Hogan, Liam Marum, Paddy Power Portlaoise, Sean Brown's Off Licence, Mark O'Boyle, Kevin Holland @ Druids Golf, Mark Keenan Plumbing, and Adrian Kelly, Captain of Portlaoise Golf Club.
