Man appeared before Portlaoise District Court

A grandfather admitted having cocaine for Electric Picnic at Portlaoise Garda Station.

Wayne Stynes, 46, of 14 Castle Drive, Kilminchy, Portlaoise pleaded guilty to possession of €140 in cocaine at Portlaoise Garda Station on August 29, 2022.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the defendant was found with the drugs at Portlaoise Garda Station.  He said the defendant had no previous convictions under the misuse of drugs act.

Solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick said the offence occurred on the eve of the Electric Picnic and her client was due to attend the music and arts festival. She said the drugs were for recreational use.

Ms Fitzpatrick said her client was the father of children and had two grandchildren and was also a carer.

Judge Nicola Andrews said she would deal with the case by way of a charitable donation of €500 on or before September 2. In default, she said the man would be convicted and face a €1,000 fine.
