A sign on the M7 giving advanced notice of the N77 closure
Laois and Portlaoise motorists and others traveling to the county town can expect major diversions in Portlaoise with the temporary closure of Abbeyleix Road.
Works will start on April 11 on the N77 (Abbeyleix Road) inbound at Junction 17 Interchange for a 2km distance to the roundabout at JFL Avenue in Portlaoise town.
Advance warning signs about the closure and diversions are in place on the M7 and in Portlaoise town. Drivers and others intending to use the N77 are being asked to divert through Junction 16 or Junction 18.
Laois County Council recently signed a contract for the roads overhaul. The N77 Abbeyleix Road Rehabilitation and Enhancement scheme aims to lay a new pavement surface, refurbish footpaths and cycle facilities and improve lighting and landscaping.
The estimated €4 million project is managed by Laois County Council and Arkil Ltd (in conjunction with Killeen Civil Engineering).
Apart from access to the town the road also serves Laois GAA's HQ - Laois Hire O'Moore Park. Fans travelling to and from the venue will can expect disruption during inter-county championship matches.
Traffic to the Clonminahm Industrial Park will also be impacted.
The works are intended to reduce the risk of collisions by lowering the speed of vehicles.
The project follows on from the completion of a €7 million new road in Portlaoise which saw a new junction/roundabout opening on the Abbeyleix Road / Fr Brown Avenue as part of the building of a new part of the Southern Circular Road.
