A councillor has requested a weight restriction for a Laois Road he says is used as a ‘shortcut’ by 30 ton lorries.

Independent Cllr Ben Brennan asked in a motion “that Laois County Council put a weight restriction on lorries using the Doonane Road, Crettyard.”

In  a written response, Senior Engineer, Road  Design Paul McLoughlin said the council “will examine this request with Cllr Brennan and the Municipal District Office staff to establish the need for a weight restriction on this section of Public Road.”

Cllr Brennan said the road is being used as “a shortcut” by lorry drivers. He said he recently witnessed two trucks full to the neck using the road.

“They are too heavy for that road. That road is not made for it,” said Cllr Brennan.

He asked the meeting of Portarlington Graiguecullen Municipal District to impose a weight restriction to prevent heavy lorries using the road.
