The post office in Durrow
Durrow Post Office will temporarily close next Friday as the current premises is being sold.
It comes as An Post has struggled to appoint a Postmaster for the local post office with customers being asked to transfer to Abbeyleix.
Commenting on the situation Sean Fleming TD said: "An Post have advertised the position of Postmaster a number of times and have made direct contact with local businesses. So far, they have been unable to find a person to take up the new contract as Postmaster for Durrow.
"However, they are continuing the efforts to appoint a Postmaster and they are hopeful that the service will be restored soon.
"I will keep in contact with An Post and the Minister on this very important issue for Durrow. It is vital that a Post Office be re-opened for the people and community in Durrow as soon as possible."
Durrow-based Cllr Ollie Clooney said he was confident that the closure was only a short-term measure. He said he was "100%" sure that it would reopen giving an estimated timeframe of a month. The independent county councillor told the Leinster Express / Laois Live that a local shop is in advanced talks to take up the contract.
In 2021 Bank of Ireland announced the closure of the Durrow branch while the local Credit Union curtailed their hours last year.
The temporary closure of the Post Office in Durrow will take place from Friday, March 8.
