In Durrow, Newtown Mill will receive €45,000 for roof repairs .
A number of historic structures in Laois will undergo repair and renovation works following the allocation of €171,000 in funding.
In Durrow, Newtown Mill will receive €45,000 for roof repairs and St. Fintan’s Church will receive €5,700 for interiors.
Woodbrook House in Mountrath has been allocated €39,000 for repairs including emergency rendering works to the original front portion of the building.
Vicarstown Old National School will receive €35,000 for works on the building including the repointing of brickwork using Irish wigging technique, and the repair and repainting of the decorative timber bargeboards.
In Abbeyleix, Church Of St Michael and Preston House have been allocated €14,000 each for renovation works.
Meanwhile a number of buildings have received funding for thatching in Fisherman’s Inn, Fishertown - (€2,750) Jamestown Cross, Ballybrittas (€12,172) and Garrymore, Mountmellick (€3,058).
The funding is being allocated through the Built Heritage Investment Scheme (BHIS) and the Historic Structures Fund (HSF).
“This is very welcome Government funding for these important historical sites in Laois,” said Sean Fleming TD, Minister of State.
“Conserving these buildings can bring a sense of pride to local communities. It can also be a great benefit to Laois communities for local tourism.”
