New Fine Gael leader Simon Harris, who is set to become the next Taoiseach, was in Portlaoise on Friday to meet and greet constituents.

Minister Harris was in the county town for a canvass and was joined by Charlie Flanagan TD, local councillors and Nina Carberry, candidate for the Midlands Northwest in the European elections.

"Great to be in Portlaoise today with colleagues and to be out meeting people across the town," said Minister Harris.

He will next travel to Galway where he will deliver his first ardfheis address as party leader. It comes as Minister Harris announced Heather Humphreys as Deputy Leader of Fine Gael.

A Dáil vote for a new Taoiseach will take place next Tuesday.
