The Hot School Meals programme is expanding in Laois with a further 19 primary schools added to the programme.
Laois/Offaly Fine Gael TD, Charlie Flanagan has welcomed the move saying school meals have a hugely positive effect on children’s health and wellbeing.
"Research indicates that the provision of school meals results in improvements in attendance in school, with evidence that providing children with food in school makes a difference to families in terms of money saved, and for some families, in time saved on food preparation," said Deputy Flanagan.
“The expansion of the Hot School Meals Programme means that 2000 schools nationwide will be receiving hot meals."
The schools added include St Joseph's National School; Rush Hall Mixed N S; Kiladooley Mixed N S; Emo Mixed N S; Rath Mixed N S; Abbeyleix Sth N S; Trummera N S; Camross N S; Tobar An Leinn; Scoil Padraig; Cill An Iubhair N S; Rosenallis N S; Scoil Phadraig; Naomh Pius X N S; S N Naomh Eoin; S N Naomh Colmcille; Scoil Mhuire; Gaelscoil Phort Laoise and Castletown N.S.
Remaining schools can now apply to receive Hot School Meals from September.
