Fine Gael’s Willie Aird expressed delight after topping the poll to become the first person elected to the Portlaoise Municipal District.
“The people have been very good to me in the Portlaoise electoral area. It is very, very hard to get 1,540 votes. That’s the highest I ever got. I am very thankful to the people that voted for me and to all the people that supported me,” he said.
When asked about a potential run in the upcoming General Election, Mr Aird wouldn't rule it out.
“I haven’t thought beyond today. All I was thinking for the last three months when I was on the road, I was only thinking about trying to get elected today. I am absolutely delighted,” he said.
“I wouldn’t rule it out but I don’t know what the party wants or who they want. I don’t rule out anything,” said Mr Aird.
