Cllr John King celebrating after being elected

Fine Gae’s John King was deemed elected on tenth count in the Borris-in-Ossory Mountmellick electoral area at just one vote below the quota.

“The greatest proof that you are doing your job is when they re-elect you and I look forward to working for everybody over the next five years,” he said after being elected.

“I am absolutely delighted to win my fourth election. Tough contest this time, a lot of extra candidates. Three candidates going in Rathdowney. I have served the people well and I want to say thanks to the people of Rathdowney and the wider area as well for giving me support. It is nice to be able to increase your vote. Over the last four elections I increased the vote every time. This time I was only just one off the quota at the end, so I am proud,” said Cllr King.

“I look forward to working with the people over the next five years. Lots of projects like town development in Rathdowney and rural villages are changing as well, so it is a welcome change and work for change as well. I am happy to be here and look forward to the next five years.

No stranger to the council, Cllr King likened the election to a brief break from school.

“It is a continuation of what I am doing already. I am like a young fella that has just left school for two days and I am happy to go back and continue. It is nice to know all the people as well in Laois County Council. I work well with all the people, you make good friendships as well.

It is not about me, I am just a link between the people and Laois County Council and that’s the role of a rural councillor,” he said.
