The ESB is working to restore power to a number of customers across Laois.

Power remains out in Portlaoise, Timahoe, Rathdowney and Pallas.

According to the ESB,  “there were a couple of thousand customers impacted by snow/ice in the county yesterday, mainly around Ratheniska/Timahoe areas. Those faults are almost clear at this stage, updates on powercheck.ie.”

Assistant Chief Fire Officer Anthony Tynan said “there were some trees down because there was snow on them.” He said this can happen to trees that are weakened from age or previous weather events.

Electrical faults remain in Rathdowney, where 49 properties lost power at around 6.50pm on Sunday.  The ESB expects to have power restored by 8pm this evening.

In Pallas, a total of 24 properties remain without power. They are expected to be restored by 12.45pm today.

In Portlaoise, 23 properties lost power at 9.43am on Sunday and they should have power back by 11.15am while 10 properties who lost power at 2.30pm on Sunday near Timahoe should have power restored by 4pm.

The ESB said approximately 59,000 homes, farms and businesses were without power, predominantly in counties Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary, Kilkenny, Carlow, Laois and Wicklow on Sunday afternoon.

“From our experience of previous significant weather events, we expect that power restoration in the worst affected areas will take multiple days. The freezing temperatures and hazardous conditions are slowing restoration efforts. Our crews will continue the restoration for as long as possible this evening but, with the difficult conditions, it is likely that the majority of customers will not have their power restored tonight.

We acknowledge the disruption to family and commercial life this causes and thank impacted customers for their patience as our crews work to safely restore power,” the ESB stated.

Real-time information on power outages are being updated on www.PowerCheck.ie

“An Important Public Safety Message: If you come across fallen wires or damaged electricity network, never, ever touch or approach these as they are LIVE and extremely dangerous. Please report any damage to electricity infrastructure by calling 1800 372 999,” the ESB added.
