Laois Gardaí urge caution after ten crashes reported

Portlaoise Gardaí are warning that black ice isn't visible on the roads

Snow in Portlaoise

A wintry scene on the way into Portlaoise

Portlaoise Gardaí are reminding motorists to take care on the roads around the county.

They said ten collisions were reported on the roads since Sunday with the majority occurring in the Portlaoise area.

Gardaí said all of the crashes have been what they describe as “material damage” meaning the vehicles were damaged but no harm came to the drivers.

Of the ten collisions, two were in Mountmellick, one was in Durrow and the remainder were in the Portlaoise area.

Portlaoise Gardaí are urging people to be aware of the road conditions in the freezing temperatures.

“Even though some of the roads seem clear it still  leaves black ice,” they explained.

“It's crucially important that motorists are aware that road surface temperatures in most of the country are now far lower than air temperatures which makes driving even more difficult.

Stay home and cosy - if you must make a journey please be prepared,” gardaí said.
