A major garda operation is underway following reports of a shooting incident at a busy shopping centre in Carlow Town.

Gardaí have confirmed the alarm was raised shortly after 6.15pm this Sunday and that they are are currently "at the scene of "an incident".

No further details have been confirmed by gardai but there are widespread reports online and on social media that a number of shots were fired during the incident and that a number of people may have been injured.

A garda spokesperson said: "The premises has been evacuated and the scene is preserved. The Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal team has been requested to attend. At this time, there is no further concern for public safety."

Gardai are appealing to anyone who may have recorded footage of the incident not to share it on social media platforms or messaging apps but instead to provide it to investigating gardaí.

Anyone with information about what happened is asked to contact Carlow garda station at 059-9136620 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.

Gardai say no additional information is currently available but that updates will be issued, when appropriate.
