Businessman and former Dragon’s Den star Peter Casey has written to Councillors in Laois seeking their nomination for a run at the Presidential election.

The Donegal based Derry born businessman, who was runner up to Michael D Higgins in the 2018 Presidential elections, appealed to Laois Councillors to support his bid.

“My main platform is to transfer significant powers of the presidency to county councillors, empowering them to shape national decisions directly. Each county councillor would have a confidential vote on whether the President should grant a pardon, refer legislation to the Supreme Court, or refuse to accept the resignation of the Taoiseach. This initiative will give local communities a genuine voice in governance,” he stated.

He said “Ireland faces serious challenges due to ineffective migration policies and rapid demographic changes in small towns and villages, often without adequate funding for housing, healthcare, and local services. Local councils are overstretched, and communities feel overwhelmed.”

“Additionally, I am committed to reining in social media excesses. As the only candidate to have successfully taken High Court action after being defamed on Facebook, I understand the importance of accountability in online platforms.”

According to Mr Casey, the campaign is about restoring balance and ensuring that change happens with, not to, the people of Ireland.

“I would greatly appreciate your support for this vision. If party politics prevent you from backing my candidacy, I kindly ask that you consider supporting another candidate who shares these principles,” he concluded.
